Public Management: A Research Overview
Public Management: A Research Overview provides a structured or selective survey of the state of the art of public management research. Selective because it is impossible to survey, even in the narrowest sense of the word, all of the work going on in the field. Characterised by Waldo (1968, p. 2) as ‘a subject matter in search of a discipline’, public management takes theories from the social sciences of politics, sociology, psychology and economics and applies them to the real-world problems of developing and delivering public policy. The curious mix of social science theory and the empirical detail of problems and policies from around the world gives the discipline both considerable scope and depth. Public management research is published in a variety of places beyond the journals specifically devoted to it. Choices have to be made. The choice made in this book is to review work under four main headings of bureaucracy, autonomy, marketisation and collaboration.
