This edited volume moves forward knowledge ont the nature and significance of public service innovation. The studies in this book demonstrate demonstrate a number of ways in which innovations are developed and implemented. A variety of new ideas have been shown to be implemented in a range of settings with the intention to improve public value, and relationships with ecosystem partners are essential to successful outcomes.

In this introduction we have noted the rapid growth by scholars of public administration in innovation. We believe that this interest will be maintained over the coming years. New research could be directed at a number of themes that emerge from this volume. There is one topic for which further research is required. This is to clarify the scale of innovation in public service organizations. Many of the innovations reported in the chapters in this volume point towards significant change in attitudes, behaviours and practices. However, there is no clarity on the scale of innovation on a continuum from incremental to radical. Public management scholars, working at the level of the individual, organization or across a population of organizations, could do well to agree on some criteria that differentiates an innovation from a change and to understand the nature of disruptive change in public service organizations.
